Femoral neck fracture: beware the lack of vitamin D!

Researchers at New Delhi have confirmed the link between vitamin D and osteoporosis. They believe the risk of fracture of the femoral neck is more important in the elderly who lack vitamin D.

To determine the relationship between vitamin D and risk of fracture, the authors followed two groups of seniors, including one composed of 90 patients with a fracture of the femoral neck. The levels of vitamin D each participant was measured.

The study shows that the vast majority of people who have had a fracture of the femoral neck lack of vitamin D. Indeed, 76.7% of those who had a fracture have a high enough vitamin D, a rate lower than 20 nanograms per milliliter, against only 32.3% of those who had no fracture.

These results suggest that vitamin D could be a useful index pout assess the risk of hip fracture in older people.
